While clearing out some old Sex and the City episodes to recycle the videotapes, I reflected on how the current more direct usage of the word sex, made the meaning much clearer than the euphemism, making love. Being an old-fashioned kind of guy, I actually like the more euphemistic usage. But despite the romantic ideal of sex with someone we truly love, this does not appear to be a prerequisite for the process.
Then I recalled reading an article about how our evolution has made sex an enjoyable process, because the survival of the species depends on it. So perhaps making love refers to loving the process itself, rather than loving the other person or even the procreative outcome. Of course this is probably an overly cynical view, but what does it have to do with creativity?
Well, creative love seems to be a bit like sex in this regard. And in this regard, it differs from other forms of love such as love for a Lamborghini, a Ming Vase, or a pina colada. In large part, it it not love for an object that drives the creative process, but love for the process itself. Of course creating something appealing and satisfying is an additional bonus.
